Kakaruwai Scientific
Experts in advanced optical microscopy and microscopic data analysis
Kakaruwai Scientific is a New Zealand-based company founded by Dr. David Baddeley to complement his academic research. Dr Baddeley is an internationally recognised expert in optical microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and microscopic data analysis with over 17 years of experience in the field. He has published over 60 articles, including several in high impact journals such as Nature Methods and Nature Biotechnology, and maintains a large open-source software package for super-resolution imaging and data analysis.
The goals of Kakaruwai Scientific are:
- to facilitate broader access to advanced microscopy techniques, by providing local expert support in the areas of experiment design, execution, and data analysis at a level which goes beyond what is typically provided by equipment vendors.
- to establish complementary funding avenues, especially to support ongoing software development and maintenance efforts which are not well supported through traditional research grants.
- to assist with the design and implementation of bespoke imaging systems and software which enable new and innovative research in the biological, biomedical, and physical sciences.
What's in the name? Kakaruwai is the Māori name for the South Island robin, a small and highly inquisitive bird endemic to New Zealand.
Services
We offer consulting services across the full range of optical microscopy and image data analysis. This ranges from the providing support for our exisiting software, through the development of new data-analysis algorithms to the design of custom optical subsystems. We are particularly interested in open-source projects, be it software or hardware.
